Doing this midterm portfolio, the lessons I learned are:
1.Creating a portfolio can be fun and hard at the same time
2.It takes a lot of skill to create a portfolio
3.The feeling got from creating a portfolio is one of smugness and superiority
4.Creating even a bit of scholarly work is very important.
5.Creating a bit of scholarly work is time consuming

How is this argument made?
I buy 100.00 textbooks that I never open
How this argument is made is by the student implying that the information in the textbooks the student has isn't worth reading. That the information in the bought textbooks isn't worth keeping in mind. So-hundreds of dollars on the bought textbooks are wasted for information that,to the student, isn't worth reading about. I sort of agree. There's only so much information that the mind can keep in check. A student can't possibly remember EVERYTHING she or he is taught. A lot of learned information could eventually be forgotten. But we students buy expensive books anyway, wasting money, for information that won't forever be kept in mind.

1)a. Binta's father's great idea is: he desires to make thwe better place by taking in a caucasian child, one who is already weaned, to enable himself to pass on knowledge to the child that industrialized society in the west had greatly lost. This knowledge would consist of such things as solidarity, sharing, and keeping resources alive. When Binta's father's great idea was revealed,I WAS surprised, because it was so unique. Binta's father showed that he cared about what was going on around him in his world, and he was willing to do whatever it took to his people see the benefits of change.
b. The ending might go against my expectations by making me understand that Binta's father saw a deeper problem in his society than not just allowing a little girl to attend school. He understood that change frightened the male side of his people. So-Binta's father creatively set about finding a way to introduce change by implementing this unique idea. I thought Binta's father was going to talk to the governor and ask if girls in his area could attend school.
2)a.Binta's father's great idea is to make the world a better place. He'll do this by adopting a caucasian child, one that is already weaned, and give her or him knowledge which society that's industrialized and in the west had greatly lost. The child would learn such things as solidarity, sharing, and maintaining resources. Binta's father's idea is a great one because it shows that Binta's father cares about what is becoming of his society. He sees that values are being lost, and he wants to keep those values. So Binta's father comes up with a plan to adopt a child who he can teach to keep lost values. Like solidarity and sharing.
b. I agree that Binta's father's idea is a great one. It shows he cares about his society and his future people.
3)Soda's father does not want her to go to school because he values the tradition of the family: for females to tend to the family and home. His fear is that if Soda is given an education, she won't live up to his expectation, which is taking care of the home and family.
No. I don't know anyone like Soda's father.
Soda wants to go to school because she sees that it is fun and that she can gain valuable knowledge from it. Soda's mother supports her because she sees that it would be beneficial to her child.
4) a.If Binta's society embraces western ways as Soleyman would like, what might be lost from their current way of life is conformity. For instance, Soda sees that some kids get to go to school and have fun and learn. So-she wants to aswell. However, her father won't let her because of his traditional values. He has to be stern with her due to her insistence on school. The irony is that the more stern he is, the more Soda insists on school. Well-the same thing could happen in Binta's society. If the western way were embraced, then something new will have been introduced and Binta's society might not want to go back to the way things were.
b. What is at stake is school. Because if school is going to cause change, and the govorner of Senegal doesn't want change, then there shouldn't be any school. Right? That way, traditional values, like girls staying home to tend to the family and NOT going to school, will be maintained.
5)What western people might learn from Binta's society is that there are informal caste systems(kids who go to school and kids who don't). Also, that the caste systems aren't fair, in regards to education. Some dads don't want their kids to get an education while others afford their kids the luxury of an education.
6)a. An educational system might work to to establish national identity and values by certain people being taught valuable things that they can pass on to the rest of the nation .
b.Yes. there are competing value systems at play in the film. Soda wants to go to school, but her father won't let her. He wants her to stay home and take care of the house and family. Also, Binta's father's idea to bring a child from outside of Senegal is laughed upon by the Senegal governor.
7) What this film makes me think about is how fortunate I am to have an education and how fortunate I am to come from a family that WANTS me to have an education. I find that some caste systems can be unfair to children and not allow a child to have an education, even when it is available. This is sad. Education is important because it broadens the mind. Without an education, it cannot grow, and in a sense the child with no education is shunned from the world. Because experiencing an education is like experiencing a small chunk of the world. There's different beliefs, cultures, and traditions that a child could learn and thus grow from. Don't give an education to a child who wants to learn, the child could possibly not learn at all.
